Project Summary

You can use the following short project summary within and for any descriptions, texts or papers.
UrbanData2Decide extracts and processes information from two rich sources, namely public social media and open data libraries, and creates impactful visualisations. This information, combined with advice from online expert panels, will support local governments towards a holistic, sustainable and well-founded decision-making process on specific urban challenges such as urban renewal, urban safety and security.
Urban decision makers are nowadays faced with both unprecedented challenges as well as new opportunities as the environment around them grows ever more complex. Out of the readily available “sea of information” some sources potentially important to decision-making have so far remained largely untapped. The UrbanData2Decide project therefore aims to extract and process information from two rich sources, namely public social media and open data catalogues. This information, combined with advice from expert panels, will support local governments towards a holistic, sustainable and well-founded decision-making process which takes into account the views and perspectives of all relevant stakeholders.

Deliverables

D3.4 Integrated framework report
This deliverable presents the data visualisation and decision-making framework developed based on the empirical work presented in deliverable 2.3, the state of the art presentation in deliverables 2.1 and 2.2 and the national concepts and the definition of common features in deliverables 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3.

D3.3 Visualisations, interface designs and mockupsreport
Built on the results from WP2 – Basic Exploration, Stakeholder Studies and Requirement Analysis – this report translates them to a more concrete level that is closer to real-life situations. One of the main tasks thereby is the more detailed outline of the two main applications: the UrbanDataVisualiser and the UrbanDecisionMaker. These applications are modelled in greater detail, especially when it comes to their methods, specifications and visualisations. Bringing these two parts together, the main objective of WP3 is the elaboration of an integrated urban data visualising and decision making framework. This framework will serve as a model for the technical proof of concept, the main focus of WP5.

D3.2 UrbanDecisionMaker report including methods, specifications and approaches
This report concerns the visualisation element of the UrbanData2Decide system. The aim of the report is to identify common features and functionalities which recur in the national concepts which have been developed, and use these as a basis for extracting generic visualisation types and use cases which any urban data visualiser might be expected to produce and tackle. On this basis, a list of recommended technologies can be developed which fit these differing visualisation types and use cases.

D3.1 UrbanDataVisualiser report including methods, specifications and approaches

D2.5 Integrated urban data visualising and decision-making framework
The work package 2 on Basic Exploration, Stakeholder Studies and Requirement Analysis creates the scientific fundament of the project and produces essential knowledge for the conceptualisation of UrbanData2Decide. The present report brings together the previous research results and elaborates an integrated research model as well as a stakeholder requirements catalogue with first use case scenarios.

D2.4 Social, ethical, and legal aspects of big data and urban decision-making
The rise of information technologies, the amount of information and data gathered daily alongside unprecedented forms of online communication and participation (via social media channels or blogs) have been increasingly challenging our notions of privacy. Given the focus on data in the UrbanData2Decide project, it is imperative to discuss the social, ethical and legal issues around big data in greater depth.

D2.3 Stakeholder, roles, workflows and requirements report
In this report stakeholders analyses have been undertaken by the UrbanData2Decide team in order to survey relevant stakeholders in the areas of urban governance for the development of the two decision support tools. As a part of the analysis, the main roles, workflows, experiences and requirements of relevant stakeholders have been mapped out in three distinctively different case studies in the cities of Malmö (Sweden), Copenhagen (Denmark) and Vienna (Austria).

D2.2 Urban Decision Making and Expert Integration Report
This report provides an overview of existing approaches, processes, tools and techniques to urban decision-making, and the usage of expert knowledge as well as data and more and more ‘big data’ to support decisions.

D2.1 Social and Open Data Visualisation Methods and Data Source Report
This report summarises background research undertaken by the UrbanData2Decide project team into social media data and open data; research which will be used as an evidence base for work package 3 – method modelling, visualisation design and framework elaboration – concerning the design of the overall system. The report looks in particular at two main issues: data sources (sections 3 and 4) as well as its applications (section 5), and data visualisation methods (section 6). In both cases, we focus on the use case of urban decision making, hence distinguishing our report from more general literature on social media, open data and visualisation.

D1.1 Kick-off meeting report
This report describes the UrbanData2Decide kick-off meeting that took place in Vienna on September 29nd and 30th 2014. Its objective was to establish the project into more detail as well as all involved partners. The focus was on the project vision, objectives, and outcomes as well as the partners’ individual expectations through workshops based on their previous experiences. Furthermore, the work packages were presented and discussed among all partners.
